
Prof. Flavia Frisone
Full Professor of Greek History at the University of Salento, Department of Cultural Heritage.
Academic profile: Graduated in Classics from the University of Messina and continued her studies with a scholarship at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. Scholarship at the Postgraduate School of Specialisation in Classical Archaeology, where she specialised in archaeology (1993). Doctorate in Ancient History (8th national doctoral cycle, 1993-1996). Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Lecce (1998).
She has been a researcher since 2000 and Associate Professor of "Greek History" since 2010.
For many years she taught "Historical Geography of the Ancient World" and then "Greek History" and "Antiquities and Epigraphy of the Greek World" for undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Salento. Since 2022 she has been teaching "Ancient Mediterranean Civilisations" for the double degree course at the University of Salento-North-West University (AnLai School).
She has been coordinator of the PhD programme in Ancient History and dean of the degree course in Cultural Heritage.
Research: For many years she has been studying ancient Greek colonisation and contacts between the peoples of the ancient Mediterranean. She has directed national research projects on this subject and published the book Colonie di colonie: le fondazioni sub-coloniali greche tra colonizzazione e colonialismo, Galatina 2009 (with M. Lombardo), as well as numerous articles and academic contributions.
Another of his research interests is rituals and their social and political significance in the ancient world, especially funerary rituals, on which he has published numerous articles and specialized studies, as well as a monograph entitled Leggi e regolamenti funerari nel mondo greco. Le fonti epigrafiche, Galatina 2000, a reference work on this type of evidence.
She has recently begun a research project with R. Auriemma on the system of coastal sanctuaries in Salento linked to trans-Mediterranean shipping.
She is also interested in the history of women in ancient Greece and, as a member of the Italian Public History Society, in public history issues.
She is the author of about 110 scholarly publications, including monographs, book chapters and review articles. She has been very active in seminars and conferences at research institutes and other institutions in Italy and abroad.
She has coordinated national university scientific research programmes and European-funded projects.
Awards and extra-academic activities: F. Frisone has received awards (including the 2023 Anassilaos International Prize) for her long-standing commitment to public engagement, particularly on issues such as women's history and gender studies from specific aspects of ancient history. She has curated exhibitions in major national museums and collaborates with public and private cultural institutions. She actively participates in public conferences, cultural festivals, public meetings, radio and television appearances and podcasts. Among these experiences, it is worth mentioning her participation as a speaker - the first Greek historian to be invited - at TEDx, an international conference format dedicated to innovation and the global dissemination of new perspectives. She will be the director of the Philosophy Festival 2025 in Agrigento (Italy).
She is a member of the Scientific Committees of various journals and series, a member of scientific and cultural societies, and was a representative of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Italy.
