Short Biography
Graduated in Lecce, Manuela De Giorgi then studied in Viterbo University, in Birmingham (M.A. in Byzantine Arts) and at again the University of Lecce (Ph.D.). She worked at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence (Max-Planck-Institut) as Director Assistant. She finally moved back in Apulia (at Salento University) for starting her academic career. First appointed as Lecturer and Reseracher, since 2023 she is Associate Professor of Medieval and Byzantine Art. From January 2022 she is member of the Board of Trustees of the ICR (Central Restauration Institute) in Rome and in March 2024 was named Vice-Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage in University of Salento.
Research Fields
The arts in Norman Sicily and Italy (11th-12th century); Byzantine iconography and iconology (from 6th to early 15th century); saints’ imagery and cults between East and West; relations between centre(s) and peripheries in Medieval arts; diagnostic and techniques in Medieval paintings; the role of cultural heritage in civic education.
